United Methodist Women
The organized unit of United Methodist Women is a community of women whose purpose is to know God and experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.

United Methodist Women’s Ministries

First Church’s United Methodist Women participate in the following ministries:

  • Prison Ministry (Clothing Room & Read with Me)
  • Social Action
  • Reading Program
  • Annual Rummage Sale
Clothing Room

We also assist women incarcerated at the Topeka Correctional Facility by gathering together bundles of clothing items for qualified women to supply them “real” clothes when they are released from the facility. First Church women, women from the Great Plains District and community members all donate lightly used clothing either to the Gathering Area downtown or to Carol Abrahamson’s home. A committee fills orders on a month-by-month basis according to an order form filled out by the inmate. Bundles, which include a purse filled with standard notions, are delivered to the prison each month. The women appreciate having something other than prison clothing to wear when they finally leave the facility. We always need books, clothing, purses and notions, as well as committee persons to help fill and prepare orders for delivery. For more information, contact Carol Abrahamson.

Social Action

Our UMW unit supports Haskell Indian Nations University by donating school supplies at the beginning of the school year as well as donating snacks during finals week.
For more information, contact Cindy Koester.

Reading Program

The Reading Program encourages members to think critically about current issues through an annual selection of member-reviewed books. It offers an excellent opportunity to deepen your spirituality and to broaden your understanding of our mission work. For 140 years, United Methodist Women have been involved in mission that includes prayer, study and action. The Reading Program is a study opportunity, but it should also lead to action. The purpose of the program is to encourage United Methodist Women members to:

Expand understanding of and participation in God’s mission.
Increase sensitivity to all human beings—their needs, interests and concerns.
Encourage critical thinking about issues facing humanity today.
Grow in understanding of Scripture as it relates to Christian faith in contemporary life.
Enhance self-knowledge and act from that knowledge.
Strengthen involvement in local and global Christian mission.
For more information on the Reading Program, contact Jane Powell.

Annual Rummage Sale

Each year, donations of gently used items are accepted, sorted, and sold at this huge rummage sale. The members of UMW spend several days sorting, pricing, and displaying the donated items for sale to the community. The proceeds from this sale go to support local mission projects and United Methodist Church-sponsored mission projects as well. Information on the 2018 rummage sale coming soon!
